Excelsior Jones
I don’t even live that close to Ashfield but I have fond memories of this cafe so last weekend, I returned for a quick visit to Excelsior Jones. The professionalism of the staff and the environment here as a whole are apparent as soon as you walk in. And seeing as it has been reviewed before, we can jump straight in…

Flat white

English breakfast tea
If you like you coffee ($3.70) strong, full bodied and rich in flavour, you need to visit EJ. They know their brew and also offer filtered coffee ($4.50). Teas ($4.50) by Teacraft, malted milkshakes ($7) and spiders ($6) are some of the other beverages available and they’re prepared with skill behind the counter.

House smoked salmon hash
I once again found myself heading back to the house smoked salmon hash ($16). It’s also available with pork but the house-smoked, flaky salmon is the perfect accompaniment to the fried buckwheat, eschalots, herbs and poached egg. The crunchy buckwheat and great combination of herbs make this a superb savoury dish.

Breakfast salad
The breakfast salad ($16) can have the same smoked salmon added for $4 (which is a bargain by the way). This fresh salad is a vegetarian’s dream because it’s done so well. The quality ingredients of baby spinach, avocado, carrot, radish, crunchy quinoa, cranberry and apple meld so well because of a light yuzu dressing.
Aside from the blackboard specials, some other dishes worth trying include the bacon and egg sandwich with capsicum relish, roquette and smokey paprika mayonnaise ($10) and the house made granola with yoghurt ($10).
It’s a short but still accomplished menu. There are a number of other items but what’s encouraging is that every dish is prepared so damn well! So what other encouragement do you need?
