Just round the corner from the main beachfront street of Kiama, you’ll find Flour Water Salt, one of three cafés in central/southern New South Wales that bake their own organic bread and pastries. They also offer breakfast, lunch and locally sourced produce and artisan goods.
While most customers are served at the counter, they’re no stranger to table service and I found all of the staff were exceptionally friendly throughout our visit. The counter, fridge and cabinets were full of amazing baked goods, fresh produce, rolls and sandwiches. Anyone who appreciates fresh, good quality food will feel at home. There are a few tables and a long bench inside as well as a sun-bathed rooftop with more tables next door.
Not only can they bake but FWS can also prepare a mean cup of coffee ($3.80). For an extra 50c, you can also request local unhomogenised The Pines milk.
Chammelia organic tea ($3.80) is available as English breakfast, Earl grey, China sencha, peppermint, chamomile, lemongrass & ginger or relaxing herbs, liquorice, peppermint & fennel.
Locally-supplied cold pressed juice is available for $8.50 per jar and FWS’ own flavoured milk is available as chocolate, iced coffee, pink, caramel or vanilla malt ($4).
I found it hard to decide which of the breakfasts to choose. Having been for lunch the day prior, I was aware of the high quality of FWS’ food. Their produce shines and that’s obvious in the avo and goat cheese toast ($12.90). There were ample amounts of all ingredients including the smooth goat cheese. My guest added bacon which arrived thin and crispy.
The breakfast burger ($11.90) tasted delicious. It was served on a soft brioche bun and came with Schulz bacon, a free range egg, balsamic roasted tomato, rocket and relish. The relish was the only let-down for me as it tasted mainly of tomato sauce. The bacon and roasted tomato were fantastic though and the crunchy rocket added some freshness.
I didn’t expect any surprises when I ordered a croissant. I anticipated a soft, buttery, well-crafted pastry and that’s exactly what arrived. FWS really does have their bread and baked good game under control. They believe in their name and that’s why their bread contains only organic flour, purified water and sea salt. The simplicity and apparent skills in the kitchen pay off.
Some other items on the breakfast menu that we didn’t have a chance to try include banana, walnut and date bread toasted with ricotta and local raw honey ($6), granola (house made almond and cranberry oven baked granola with fresh berries and local yoghurt from Berry ($9.50) and eggs and salmon (free range poached eggs, smoked salmon, dill and lemon ($14.90).
With such reasonable prices for high quality ingredients in delicious dishes, Flour Water Salt definitely needs to be on your list if you’re in the area.
