Gather on the Green, Camperdown – Rating: 18.5/25

Gather on the Green

Gather on the Green

Opened in 2011 by sisters Kim Glover and Amanda Webster, Gather on the Green represents their way of bringing together a passion for food, friends, family and nutrition.

Combining their respective talents of nutrition & dietetics and ten years of interior design, Kim and Amanda have kept the innerwest charm of the original building (by showcasing the original wall as a feature splashback for example) and created a homely and very welcoming café with a seasonal eco-friendly menu.

Situated in a quiet cul de sac, GOTG looks onto Camperdown Park so it’s an idyllic location.  This all means that the crowds can swell towards mid-morning but it’s worth the wait…

Mecca coffee is the label of choice due to Kim and Amanda’s partiality for their beans.  Our cups were $3.50 each and while we enjoyed them, I wanted a stronger flavour.  Short black for me next time!  Single origin cold drip ($5) is also available or you can indulge with an affogato ($4.50).

Mixed berry and banana smoothie

Smoothies ($6.50) are available as mixed berry, banana or mango.  I asked for a mixed berry and banana smoothie and they were happy to oblige.  The result was a smoothie of excellent consistency and fantastic taste.  Cold, large and full of flavour.  Milkshakes ($5.50) can be ordered as chocolate, vanilla, caramel, strawberry, banana, or lime.

Fruit salad with yoghurt and honey

The fruit salad with yoghurt and honey ($9) came with a whole plethora of fruit and some passionfruit to top it off.  There was a small serving of yoghurt and honey on the side but to be honest they weren’t really needed as the fruit was fresh, ripe and delicious.

Bacon & egg roll

Bacon & egg roll

I’m pleased to report that I had with me my bacon & egg roll ($6.50) expert!  Whenever he joins me for a review, he is my dedicated roll or wrap sampler and the GOTG version had him smiling despite a hangover!  Organic roll, stacks of bacon and a delicious spicy tomato relish were a marriage made in heaven and it all stayed together well as he was eating it.  The relish, as you’ll see, is used with a few other dishes and it is easily the best relish I’ve eaten for a few years.  That is quite an accomplishment!

French toasted brioche

French toasted brioche

My dish for the morning was French toasted brioche.  While you can also order it with berries and maple syrup for $15, I chose the version with caramelised banana, bacon and maple syrup for $13.

The brioche made for some extra soft toast which might not be to everyone’s liking but it was cooked with a nice slightly crunchy exterior.  As you can see by the colour, the banana was caramelised beautifully and there was a lot of bacon served on the side (always a plus!).

Haloumi, spinach and egg

Haloumi, spinach and egg

One of the dishes on the menu is the haloumi, spinach and egg roll ($8) which also comes with the spicy tomato relish.  My guest wanted these items without the roll but served on toast.  She visualised it as an open sandwich however it arrived completely deconstructed.  She still enjoyed all of the components though.  She would have liked to have seen the butter spread on all of the toast instead of just in the centre or had extra butter provided.  The spicy tomato relish was left behind but made its way to us when we inquired.

Two poached eggs on toast

Another guest’s resulting meal ended up being quite similar to the one above as she ordered the two poached eggs on toast ($9) which once again come with the spicy tomato relish (which is okay because we couldn’t get enough of it)!  She added haloumi for $4.  The eggs and haloumi were cooked exactly how one would expect so there were zero complaints there.  The order was slightly mixed up and the extra bacon that she had also ordered was brought a bit later.

Poached eggs with field mushrooms

The poached eggs with field mushrooms, spinach & goats cheese ($16) was presented beautifully on sourdough toast.  My guest ordered cripsy bacon ($3) on the side and that’s exactly how it arrived.  It was nice to see more than a smidgen of goats cheese on the two glorious mushrooms.  She was extremely happy with this dish.

Raspberry and pear muffin

The in-house muffins are absolutely fantastic.  It’s no wonder that the chef Ron Woodhouse has been asked to hold muffin classes!  The cookies and health treats like superfood powerballs are also made on site.  Gluten free options are available too and “supplied by a local mother who runs her own small business supplying GF treats.”

There are a few other things that I’d like to return for such as smashed avo and fetta with lemon & chilli flakes on sourdough ($12)superfood brekkie (quinoa cooked in apple juice with cranberries, served with yoghurt and fresh blueberroes & strawberries ($9.50) and the baked eggs with homemade bakes beans & fetta, served with sourdough toast ($15.50).

Expect to see new items all the time on the menu.  Not only are there smoothie specials but there are also new salads each week as well as soups and sandwiches depending on what fresh seasonal produce is available.

if it wasn’t for a few complications on the day with some items being delayed or not arriving from the kitchen, Gather on the Green would be receiving a plus-twenty score but I always keep it honest and fair.  I will definitely return though as I am very happy to have found an establishment that is run by people who are as excited about food as I am.
