The Penny Royal, Mosman – Rating: 18/25

The Penny Royal

The Penny Royal

The Myahgah Mews is a laneway in Mosman that plays host to a few breakfast spots that, despite the shade, are busy all year round including during winter.  The Penny Royal has a burgeoning base of repeat customers so you may find that you need to wait for a table.  It’s a tight fit inside but their tables sprawl along the Mews too.  During my interactions with staff, I found them to be helpful and courteous.  They definitely don’t hang around though as they’re busy all of the time.

Our coffees were outstanding.  Mosman does have some nice cups but TPR has just joined my list of the top Northshore coffee locations.  At $3.50 they’re also on par with the majority of Sydney cafés.

Za'atar toast

Za’atar toast

The za’atar toast ($10) offers sourdough with the spices brushed over the top.  Fresh tomato sits atop the toast while a soft boiled egg and Greek yoghurt are served on the side.  It’s a harmony of flavours in a simple dish.

Continuing the North African theme, the Moroccan bruschetta ($10) comprises of a house blend of Moroccan spiced chic peas, hummus and avocado on toasted sourdough with grated parmesan.

"B&E"

“B&E”

The “B&E” ($10) cheats a bit in that it substitutes prosciutto for the standard bacon.  I would have preferred the latter but prosciutto works well and it’s soft enough to ensure that the avocado and egg aren’t crushed and ooze out everywhere!  Served on a small brioche bun with melted Provolone cheese, this definitely fits more into the ‘snack’ category but I enjoyed the flavour combination and the sweet roasted tomato relish works well.

With a very small kitchen, The Penny Royal does a remarkable job of producing refined breakfast dishes from a unique and mouth-watering menu.  Other items include house-made paleo granola ($15)smoked salmon bruschetta (herbed ricotta, avocado, leafy greens and smoked salmon toasted sourdough, $13) and house made tortillas (slow cooked beef brisket, crunchy slaw and spicy guacamole ($15).  The prices are all fantastic so if you’re after a spot that knows its flavours and produces superb coffee, look no further.
