If you like the American 50’s diner style of establishment, then you’ll be very excited about Batch Batch Burgers & Espresso in Kirribilli. And what’s not to like? Shakes, smoothies, sodas, cold drip, pancakes and best of all, breaky burgers!
Batch is quite small but you have the choice of tables outside or of course stools at the counter. The menu is clever enough to have a very American feel but still include some of the commonly expected Sydney breakfast items.
Service was fast throughout our visit. My only complaint is that my food arrived at least five minutes before my three guests’ did.
This is coffee ($3.80) that will put hair on your chest! Strong but oh so delicious. You can sweeten the deal with an affogato ($4.50), ice coffee or ice chocolate ($6 each).
T2 tea ($3.80) is available for the tea drinkers as well as chai ($3.80). Why not freshen up with some freshly brewed iced tea ($5) or a 50/50 (half iced tea & half lemonade, $6).
Shift across to the cold drinks side of the menu and it’s just as exciting with offerings such as shakes (chocolate, vanilla, strawberry or caramel, regular $6, thick $7, malt 50c extra). You can add mix-ins to any of these of Crunchie, Mars, Cherry Ripe or Maltesers!
Sodas ($5) on offer include strawberry, passionfruit, mango, lychee, mint fizz or berry). There are more drinks on offer, let’s just say that you won’t leave thirsty!
The pancakes ($15) come in three different varieties: berry & vanilla with fresh cream, bananarama (banana & maple syrup) or my American stack which accompanies the pancakes with a fried egg, American bacon and maple syrup. My egg was cooked well enough to suit most tastes but I would have preferred the yolk slightly runnier. The bacon was super crispy which I always enjoy and the pancakes are definitely worth returning for (and that’s the most important part)!
So let’s compare the Batch breaky burger and the beefy breaky burger ($14 each).
The beefy comes with beef, bacon, egg, hash brown and cheese with tomato or barbecue sauce. The Batch comes with the above except the hash brown and sauces are substituted with tomato and fruit relish served on a brioche bun. If you want a lighter version, opt for the breaky roll ($6)
The patty of the Batch came surrounded with melted cheese and topped with a decent amount of bacon. The fresh tomato works well with the other cooked ingredients and overall this was a delicious breakfast time burger. Maybe I need to make a sub category to review all of those around Sydney…
The big breakfast ($16) comes loaded. Eggs any style, bacon, beans, mushrooms, avocado, tomato and hash brown with toast somewhere beneath all of that! My guest ordered hers without the beans. Everything that arrived was cooked and presented well. The bacon once again was nicely crisp while everything else that should have been fresh, was.
The eggs Benedict ($15) is mostly the usual fare although Batch is thoughtful enough to throw in fresh baby spinach regardless of whether you choose bacon, ham or salmon. The toast beneath was light and delicious. Neither my guest nor myself was impressed by the hollandaise though as it was too thick and creamy with very little hint of flavour. This dish almost hit the mark though…
There are a few other dishes that I’d like to try next time: omelette (with your choice of 3 ingredients chosen from the sides, $14), breaky burrito (scrambled egg, bacon, mushroom, tomato, cheese and baby spinach wrapped in a tortilla, $12) and the French toast (choice of American bacon & egg, berry & vanilla (I suppose ice cream) or banana & maple syrup, $15).
For those of you on the North shore looking for a new and different will enjoy Batch. A friendly vibe, good hot food and plenty of delicious drinks.
