Pablo & Rusty’s, Lane Cove – Rating: 16/25

Pablo & Rusty's Speciality Coffee

Pablo & Rusty’s Speciality Coffee

Pablo & Rusty’s Speciality Coffee in Lane Cove is one of their five stores in Sydney.  It operates a booming business on the weekend due to the large number of people in the Lane Cove Village although the crowd is there mainly to pickup takeaway coffee.  The fairly concise breakfast, lunch and beverage menu boards hover above and ordering & payment is conducted at the counter.
Our meals took slightly longer than I was hoping most likely due to the very confined kitchen.
Strawberry and cream milkshake

Strawberry and cream milkshake

Raise your pitchforks as you realise that I have committed the sin of visiting a purveyor of coffee yet did not sample any.  This will have to come next time as my guest and I were not able to fit in anything else after we ordered  everything you see here!
The two board cold drinks available today were the strawberry and cream milkshake and mango, strawberry and mint frappe ($6.50 each).  The milkshakes were enjoyable if slightly too thick and icy.
Ciabatta with romas, avo, fetta and pesto

Ciabatta with romas, avo, fetta and pesto

The self descriptive ciabatta with romas, avo, fette and pesto ($12) offered a brilliant combination of ingredients that we all know just work together.  The pesto especially was delicious and chives work well with most breakfasts so this was a hit!
Brioche French toast

Brioche French toast

The brioche French toast ($14) comes with two slices of toast topped with banana, strawberries, walnuts and syrup.  The bread would have benefited from some extended soaking but thanks to the fresh ingredients and an abundance of syrup, this is a great choice for sweet fans.
Board special

Board special

Today there were two breakfast boards on offer.  The vegetarian option offered poached eggs, grilled mushrooms, avo and fresh tomato ($17) while the one I chose came with poached eggs, bacon, chorizo (which I also just learned from a friend that we are all pronouncing incorrectly!) and fresh tomato ($17).
For the less dexterous among us, soft boiled eggs on a board with no groove around the edges will prove to be a messy affair!  Regardless, my eggs were poached beautifully and the chorizo was juicy and smoky.  For the price, some extra bacon, toast or avocado would have been appreciated.
Other breakfasts on offer include brekky roll (shortcut bacon, smoked BBQ sauce and egg, $8.50)all spiced granola with rhubarb compote and yoghurt ($8.50) and house bircher muesli with Granny Smith apples and compote ($8.50).
On weekends this can be a very busy and loud location.  Unfortunately on this morning it was also extremely smokey as well (from what seemed to be oil in the pans).  After talking to those who frequent P&R, I know that this isn’t always the case but I’m scoring the ‘atmosphere’ component on my visit as that is how the reviews are conducted.  Hopefully the food preparation will be slightly faster next time and the smokey haze can be rectified.
