Caffè San Marco, Milan – Rating: 18/25

Caffè San Marco

Sydney on Sunday makes a small side trip to Italy this weekend.  First stop Milan.  Caffè San Marco is warm and welcoming on a cold winter’s morning.  A queue has already formed at the counter as locals order their coffees and drink them hurriedly at the bar.  As tourists we take the time to watch the ritual and see scores of people come and go.

Brioche and cappuccino

The barista takes the orders, makes the coffees and chats with the clientele.  We order a cappuccino (€1.10). The coffee is strong, milky and without chocolate sprinkled on top.  We’ve been told that the morning is the only time you should order coffee with milk.  After this, you should order an espresso.  That’s if you want to be taken seriously by the barista.

Pastries

The pastries are self service and most people select one and eat it while drinking their coffee.  We chose a chocolate, hazelnut brioche (€1.00). Beware, they are very sweet and leave pastry crumbs all down your front.  It wasn’t very filling and we’re not sure if we could survive off this diet for breakfast every day.  Most cafes in Milan only offer pastries and coffee for breakfast, rather than the range of eggs, toast and juices we’re used to in Sydney.

The friendly barista and her equipment

Caffè San Marco is located on Corso Sempione about 15 minutes drive from the city centre of Milan.  There is a tram stop conveniently located outside the café that will take you to the famous Duomo cathedral and undercover shopping arcade Galleria Vittorio Emanuele.  Enjoy!
