Nestled on the southern side of the Woolworths open-air carpark in Neutral Bay, we were surprised to find Chaos, a thriving establishment for the residents of the surrounding area. Busy weekend mornings produce a throng of customers which sometimes means a 5-10 minute wait. And it’s well worth it!
We took the liberty of seating ourselves inside. The fake tattoo-bearing waitress (it was Australia day after all) was quick and polite. Funky beats created a relaxed, hip atmosphere. The brightly coloured chairs, each one with its own colour and personality have been a feature since the opening of the cafe over 15 years ago.
We indulged in a variety of cold berry-based drinks. The mixed berry & apple frappe ($6.50) was a sensation. Ice cold and with a variety of berries it packed an incredible flavour hit. The strawberry smoothie ($6.50) (with skim milk) was thick and full of fresh strawberries. One member of our party was unsure if the added honey was a necessity but enjoyed it nonetheless. The second frappe was raspberry and mango ($6.50) and like the first was fresh and satisfying, perfect for a summer’s day.
5-6 minutes had barely passed and our food order arrived. The Chaos vegetarian brekky ($14.90) sounded delicious according to the menu however the “seasonal greens” turned out to be spinach, which was flat and unappetising. The grilled roma tomatoes, mushrooms and eggs were cooked to perfection which made up for this. There was also a nice choice of breads Turkish, rye or sour dough. Overall it was delicious and and would be recommended to any vego.
The eggs benedict with ham ($13.50) (the other options are smoked salmon, bacon or spinach) was amazing. We would have preferred more of the hollandaise sauce but this was how benedict should taste. The two eggs were still slightly runny, the ham was plentiful and the muffin toasted perfectly. Some more of the tasty herbed roasted tomato would have been appreciated to give it more of a presence on the dish. It seemed to be there just for appearance but compliments the Chaos breakfasts well.
We found little to fault. The staff and patrons are a relaxed, friendly group. The dishes were presented simply but tasted great and the frequently updated specials menu and mexican-inspired lunches (eg chicken quesidilla, nachos, burrito) will be enough to entice us back for another visit.
