Bar Sirocco, Annandale – Rating: 19.5/25

Bar Sirocco

Bar Sirocco

The aroma of fresh coffee and turkish toast greeted us as we sat at the last free outdoor table at Bar Sirocco.  The reputed genius of the establishment’s chef, Aston Grasse, promised a morning of fantastic flavours.  Booth Street is busy but quiet enough to allow for a relaxed and enjoyable breakfast.  The morning crowd comprised of mainly couples and families.

Perfect for hot summer days, we dove straight into mixed fresh fruit juices – pineapple & carrot ($5.50) and orange, apple, carrot, celery ($5.50).  The only thing missing was ice which would have made them even more thirst-quenching.  A rave review for the iced chocolate ($5.00) with lashings of chocolate down the side of the glass, all topped with ice cream and dusted chocolate.

Oven Baked Eggs

Oven Baked Eggs

May we humbly present you with the oven baked eggs on bacon, tomato & basil, spinach & feta cheese served with toast ($13.50).  This delicate yet hearty dish is served with the eggs still trembling from the heat and comes with the SOS stamp of highly recommendedness.  Layer the contents of the bowl onto the toast and enjoy.  The dominant flavours are the tomato & basil but the entire dish is a perfect blend – a must have.

French Toast with Bacon & Maple Syrup

French Toast with Bacon & Maple Syrup

The french toast with bacon & maple syrup ($12.00) can also be ordered with poached mixed berries as opposed to the bacon and maple syrup.  We should have ordered a dish with both of the toppings as they would have worked together… next time!  The toast was thick and beautifully cooked.  The texture was firm but soaked up the syrup and melted like butter under the knife.  The bacon was stripped of most of the rind and fat, crispy and very tasty.  Unusually for french toast, there was an actually over-abundance  of maple syrup provided! Bonus points for the chef.

One of our companions ordered 2 eggs scrambled with turkish toast and side orders of bacon and avocado ($13.50) with a special request to have the eggs firm and cooked through.  Happy to oblige, the dish was served as requested, the avo was fresh and the Turkish bread toasted perfectly.

On the lighter side, another companion ordered sourdough toast with butter and marmalade ($4.50).  She was disappointed that the Western Star butter packages were not refrigerated and the butter overly soft on a warm morning.

The staff of Bar Sirocco are attentive yet give you space when necessary.  They were friendly to all – adults, children and pets.

We will definitely return to Bar Sirocco one day soon for breakfast and/or lunch.  There are updated specials boards for both meals and we are keen to enjoy more of the original dishes – most with their own sauces and dressings which are made on site.
